About Us
How We Roll
Who We Are
The Rubber City Rollergirls are a diverse group of women>
brought together by a common thread - a love for skating! Women's
roller derby is quickly becoming popular again, providing a
perfectly good reason for grown women to dust off those skates and
get back in the rink.
But isn't roller derby a violent sport, and aren't
rollergirls mean?
The answer is "no" and "no"! Like football, roller derby is a
contact sport and an aggressive sport, but it isn't violent. And as
for the "mean" part, no way! The Rubber City Rollergirls are
accountants, stay-at-home-moms, teachers, nurses, librarians,
students and hairdressers. (Have you ever met a mean
hairdresser?)
Breaking Old Stereotypes
Many people think back to the roller derby of the 1970's, when it
was a "show" - fun to watch but akin to pro wrestling on skates.
Well, times have changed. Today's derby is a legitimate sport with
rules - no elbows, no tripping, no being tossed over the railings!
There are standardized rules set by the Women's Flat Track Derby
Association (WFTDA), which govern the sport.
A "Sport", not a "Spectacle"
The Rubber City Rollergirls are about the "sport" of roller derby,
not the "spectacle". While some of the old traditions remain
("derby names", for example), we believe in furthering the sport,
rather than trivializing it. Our players pay to play, train hard
year round and look and act like a sports team.
We're looking for a few good women!
Want to skate? We are currently recruiting! Players must be at
least 18 years old and have health insurance coverage. Prior derby
experience is not necessary, but basic skating skills are a plus.

Recruitment Director for more information.
"A TEAM WITH A HEART"
The Rubber City Rollergirls are a nonprofit 501(c)(3)
organization, and our mission includes giving back to the
community, particularly causes that affect women and children. We
do this through charitable donations, fundraisers and most special
to us, our "Skate for Kids" program, which provides special skating
events for homeless and other at-risk children, free of
charge.
This program was born from what began as a simple
idea: provide a free skating party for underprivileged
kids. In November 2008 we held our "First Annual Holiday Skate for
the Kids", hosting 105 children for a free evening of skating,
pizza, Christmas ornament making and...fun. The positive feedback we
received was tremendous, with the most common being that these
children really need fun in their lives and the ability to just "be
kids".
Our "Third Annual Holiday Skate for the Kids" will take
place in November 2010, and we hope to double
our attendance and host over 200 children! Additionally, as we
continue to develop the Skate for Kids Program, the Rubber City
Rollergirls plan to add even more free skating events for
underprivileged kids throughout the year.
Interested in supporting our Skate for Kids
Program? We can't do it alone! We incur
many expenses to put on these events, such as skating rink fees,
skate rental, food and supplies. If you would like to make a
financial contribution to our Skate for Kids program, please select
